We’ve been weaving at our beloved Yorkshire mill for over 230 years and during this time, bold stripes have become our signature. We are very skilled at weaving crisp, clean lines whether they be blocks of colour or muted, earthy tones.

Historically we have produced the Newmarket throw and this has been woven at our mill for a long time. This traditional racehorse blanket is iconic in the equine world and the rich red, amber and navy stripes are widely recognised. We still weave the Newmarket throw today and it has now become part of our Heritage collection in the Scarlet and Argent range.

Heritage Collection

Heritage Collection – (L-R) Newmarket, Albion, De Lancey, Millicent, Winston

We’ve added to this with our Millicent, Winston, Albion and De Lancey throws, each with historical connections. They each have stripes as the basis of their design and the colours have been chosen to reflect the story behind each one.

Bold stripes of colour also make an appearance in our aptly named Mill Stripe range. Combining a traditional design with modern colour ways, these blankets and throws are a beautiful addition to any home, adorning a sofa or bed, and they are also very soft and warm!

Mill Stripe Spring

Mill Stripe Spring – blanket and cushion set

Each blanket and cushion set in the Mill Stripe range has a story behind its design too. The Mill Stripe Spring is woven in fresh green and blue with a touch of navy to reflect the private spring that runs directly underneath the mill and provides us with the water we use to make our products. Meadow combines bright yellow, pink and blues to evoke memories of fields filled with flowers and the nautical inspired Classic Navy is a simple and stylish combination of crisp white and navy stripes.

It’s clear that we love stripes and they are part of our heritage, we are delighted that so many of our colourful designs in the Scarlet and Argent range can incorporate them to offer a real mix of old and new!

We are very proud of our rich British heritage and the skill and dedication that goes into our work and that’s why we choose suppliers like Merrythought to work with on our Scarlet & Argent range.

Merrythought is a fourth generation family business which has been hand-making traditional teddy bears in the famous Ironbridge factory in Shropshire since 1930 and is now the last remaining British teddy bear manufacturer, celebrating their 85th anniversary this year!

We have worked with Merrythought for a number of years combining their skill and craftsmanship with ours to create our adorable Scarlet and Argent cashmere bears. We provide them with our finest cashmere, which comes from the delicate under belly wool brushed from a cashmere goat, and they use this luxurious cloth to craft our fully jointed bears, finishing them with our light grey melange melton cloth for contrast on the paws.

Each bear is lovingly handmade in England using traditional methods, just like our blankets and throws, giving them all a unique character and superior quality that will last for generations.

We have a lot in common with Merrythought, the family business, passed down through generations, strong British roots and, most importantly, the passion and dedication in making beautiful finished products for families to treasure forever.

One of the joys of working as a textile manufacturer is that we get to create products we really love and our Unity throw is no exception.

We really wanted to create something that could be used in a multitude of ways and this throw does the job perfectly, it’s an accessory for the sofa, a cover up for chilly evenings and even a finishing touch to your favourite outfit!

When we began designing Unity we knew we wanted something textured but lightweight and the open weave we achieved on Unity is what makes it so special.

Woven using 100% lambswool, and finished with a simple hem, Unity adds sophisticated warmth to your home draped over a sofa or chair and it also makes the perfect snuggling cover for chillier evenings. Because we liked the simple yet chic design so much we also made sure that it was soft and fluid enough to be worn as a cape, draped around your shoulders and maybe even accessorised with a brooch or decorative pin.

However it’s used, this stylish throw, available in three classic colours, will fit effortlessly into any home (or wardrobe) and provide a versatile and stylish addition to your life.

Each and every piece of cloth we weave is made with such care and we are proud of the team in the mill who work hard to produce the perfect finished products you see on our website.

Raw fibres are carefully blended, spun into yarns and then woven together to produce the individual pieces of cloth which make up our beautiful blankets, throws and cushions. After each piece has been woven, it is the job of our highly skilled Picking and Mending team to inspect it to ensure it is perfect before any finishing processes are applied. The technicians look closely over every inch of the fabric under a special light to check for impurities and faulty threads which they will remove and repaired. This is a very meticulous process which is all carried out by hand – the level of attention to detail is extremely high!

Only when they are 100% happy with the quality of the piece do they sign it off by applying a piece number and their own initials to the edge of the cloth. This is their personal seal of approval and shows they are satisfied that the fabric meets the Hainsworth quality. Our technicians take great pride in what they do and quality is our priority at every stage of the weaving process. It is important to us that this level of care is taken to make sure all of our products our customers receive are perfect.

The Design Process…where do we begin?

Before we even started to design the pieces for our new collection we first had to do our research. We began pulling together popular trends, colourways, fabric swatches and designs and started to build an idea of what we should be designing. We also made sure we found out what our customers wanted and they gave us feedback on what they liked and disliked from the previous collection and what they wanted to see us add to the new one.

When we started designing the new collection we knew we wanted texture, colour and of course lots and lots of heritage! Mood boards helped us to visualise how the colours would fit together and how we could make the range of different textures work as a collection. The fun part was choosing a story and meaning for each piece as we wanted to incorporate our 230 years of history and our involvement in some significant events in history.

We then went about picking different yarns and colours and digitally designing each blanket and throw so we could see which patterns and colours worked together. Once we were happy with the designs we trialed and tested wool blends, dyes and weaves until all of the products were just how we wanted them.

As well as the blankets, throws and cushions, we also had to think about our packaging, labels and all of the other marketing materials that go with the collection. We sourced raw materials for our scented cedar blocks, picked the fragrance oils for our scented candle and decided which colour ribbons our cashmere bears would wear.

All of these finishing touches would bring the whole collection together and get our products ready for the shelves.

I have had some new and very interesting experiences this week…when I designed this collection I never imagined that I would be interviewed for TV and radio and appear in the local newspaper! But, it was a fantastic experience and a great way to get the word out about Scarlet & Argent and the new collection.

First up was my interview on BBC Radio Leeds which wasn’t at all how I expected. After a 5.30am start (and I’m not a morning person), armed with a cup of Earl Grey to keep me warm, I encountered the world of radio. I have a new respect for radio presenters – I’ve no idea how they keep chatting for so long and keep the threads of their topic going.

Later that afternoon I was interviewed for Look North. The interview, which will only last a couple of minutes when edited, took hours of filming to produce. We started at 10am filming the processes in the mill (of which there are so many – it’s like a different world in the mill!) and then after an interview and filming of products, the crew didn’t leave until around 2pm. I think that it always surprises me as to how much time creativity takes. Even with the collection, every element had to be considered from the fibre and colour, right down to the method of attaching the label and swing ticket at the end. It took ages playing around with the wool coaster set, working out the best way to attach the swing ticket without it detracting from the product itself.

It was a big surprise to see that Campaign for Wool had reported the story on their Facebook page, and a real highlight of my week. I was on the train home, scrolling through my newsfeed and came upon it! I always find their feeds really interesting, so it was an honour to be on there myself! I wonder whether Prince Charles saw it too…?

During the interviews I was asked some questions about my family connections which prompted me to delve further into my family history. I’ve always known that I am distantly connected to the mill through family links, but it’s taken me a long time to piece it all together. My great-great grandfather, Charles Hainsworth, was my last direct relative to have run the mill (as a female, it was not passed down to my great granny Nancy), but my grandfather’s cousin Rodger Hainsworth was a company director up until a couple of years ago. The current family directors and MD in the company all followed a different family line. They are descendants of Reuben Gaunt, who was Charles Hainsworth’s brother.

Although daunting at times, I enjoyed my moment in the spotlight and I look forward to seeing Scarlet & Argent feature more in the media in weeks to come!
